Ah, bottle refusal. Or as it's also known- "my baby won't have a bottle and I am losing my ever-loving mind."
Yous'd retrieve that once yous got over the hurdle of those early fiddly tender disruptive frustrating breastfeeding days, a bottle would be a piece of cake… only if you're reading this weblog mail there's a good chance your baby refuses to take a canteen.
Effort not to panic- hopefully you've got at least a calendar week or two until whatever effect or life change is coming upward that the bottles are required for. This frequently FEELS like an emergency, but you have time.
If someone tells you lot to but send baby to the sitter with a canteen and "if he/she is hungry plenty, he/she volition figure it out" or "daycare workers are really good at bottles so don't bother trying at home first", give that person your sternest angry eyes and walk away from them.
Canteen refusal can be incredibly stressful. It's going to be okay. You're not going to let your babe starve.
(Now, if your baby actually does need to eat from something other than you RIGHT Now and won't accept a bottle, I suggest you put some pumped milk in a medicine loving cup or shot glass as shown in this video. It can be a bit messy, but baby will exist fed and give you a redundancy programme until you get this whole bottle SNAFU figured out. Sometimes a sippy loving cup with a flexible straw works, besides.)
The goal hither is to brand slow and steady progress while keeping bottle feeding HAPPY and At-home. Screaming, crying babies aren't going to eat no matter how many brands of bottles yous try.
I'm here to help!
We'll kickoff with a dry, clean, empty bottle.
1 Let your baby play with/suck/chew on the bottle nipple with NO food in information technology starting time. That's right, but the nipple and the bottle collar. If your baby is old enough to put things in their rima oris, manus them the nipple and let them explore it. If babe isn't quite that old then try gently introducing the nipple to their oral cavity similar a pacifier. We want this to be non-threatening and low pressure.
2 Once your babe is comfy with the nipple being in their oral fissure you'll desire to try dipping the nipple in expressed milk and letting them suck on it; once more, this is WITHOUT information technology being full of milk. We're only making friends with the nipple, not eating.
3 If your babe won't suck on the nipple no affair what you exercise, get them to play tug-of-war while sucking your make clean finger or a pacifier (if they'll accept one). They will demand to loving cup your finger with their tongue, extend it over their gums, and go along it at that place while they suck. When they're sucking you'll tug your finger/pacifier a scrap to encourage them to suck it dorsum in.
4 If yous can't go your baby to suck on a bottle nipple, pacifier, OR your finger and you've tried this over and over for at least 3 days, you need i-on-i help with a skilled IBCLC to figure out what's going on. There'southward always a reason babies aren't sucking, and the reason is never "considering he wants to brand my life harder."
5 Once you lot've got babe used to sucking on the bottle nipple, hand them an empty bottle to play with/get used to. Again, continue information technology low pressure and fun.
Headed back to work?
My dorsum to work pumping planning canvas for exclusively breastfed babies takes all the guesswork out of making milk for your baby while you're separated.
You're gear up to move on to a canteen with something IN it!
Once they're convinced that the canteen isn't going to do them grave bodily harm you lot can fill up it with well-nigh one ounce of pumped milk. Warm? Cold? Doesn't really thing. Try one, try both. Nearly babies don't accept whatever problem drinking cold breastmilk straight from the fridge.
Yous'll want to start with baby sitting upward, and yous want to slowly bear on the nipple tip to their lips so they'll open up their rima oris, and and then to the roof of their oral fissure right behind the gumline, allowing them to suck it in.
No shoving, no forcing, no screwing the bottle into baby's oral fissure. Keep your tone light and fun. Don't let them run across you sweat!
Once you get your baby to allow the bottle nipple into their oral fissure, you may need to flim-flam them into sucking on it and drinking. There are lots of ways of doing this.
I'1000 going to give you a boatload of ideas- merely information technology's very important that you DO Non Effort THEM ALL AT One time. Endeavour a few of these in one session if your baby is calm and happy. If your baby gets upset, STOP!
- Hold infant facing out and walk around
- Wear babe in a infant carrier or sling (and motion!)
- Become outside and bear witness baby distracting, colorful things
- Bounciness on a yoga ball or... well probably not a trampoline, but, you lot know, whatever way yous bounce your baby, do that
- Distract baby with a shiny loud obnoxious low-cal-up moving toy
- Call in a pet or an older sibling and bribe them into being actress fascinating
- Turn on the Tv set or iPad (I won't tell anyone)
- White noise is your BFF; effort information technology (and and then attempt it even louder)
- Concur baby as if they are nursing (snuggle them upward shut to you, belly to belly)
- Offer the canteen when infant is juuuust waking upwardly and hungry only withal sleepy, like a dream feed
- Try laying baby on their side (in your lap, or in the colic hold in your artillery)
If you Practice get baby to suck and swallow, even one time or twice, be super sweet and happy about it in a calming way. They have to acquire that this is okay and non threatening and that sometimes even when nosotros're loudly jubilant, it confuses them.
Keep it happy and soothing! And if they only do one or two sucks and swallows and and then end, don't strength it. Count it as a win and try over again after.
Considering here's the affair I've constitute in every single bottle refusal (and also, breast refusal) consult I've washed- if baby isn't taking the bottle (or breast) At that place IS A REASON. Babies don't turn down bottles just to be jerks and show u.s.a. who'due south boss.
If y'all've tried all these things- the suggested bottles and nipples, the distraction, the slow and steady, and NOTHING is working, you need to telephone call in an expert.
